S4-E15 - The Community Services Center: Director Adam McMillan on the history of a place that's here to help

A horrific murder of an American teenager by two other American teenagers in 1985 led to some serious soul-searching: How could the international community in Taiwan (some of whom don't speak Chinese well enough to get help from local sources) aid those going through mental health crises, are in need of counseling, or simply need better ways to gather and bond?

The answer became the Community Services Center, a place where, for almost 40 years now, people help each other, organize public service activities, take language, weaving, or you-name-it classes, and much more. Adam McMillan (stepping down soon after 11 years as director) has some stories to tell.

Following the tragedy in 1985, community leaders looked for a solution. The Center was formed as a subsidiary of the Taipei Adventist Hospital. In 1995, the Community Services Center was formally registered as a nonprofit foundation with the Taipei City Department of Education.

The Center conducts more than 90 classes and tours annually, publishes a monthly magazine (Centered on Taiwan), puts on community-loved events such as the Annual Fundraising Auction with Halloween theme, and has published nine books.

Today The Center has 15 counselors on staff who handle counseling and crisis intervention. Over the years, the Center’s programs have expanded to include newcomer orientations, cross-cultural training, English publications and information, classes and tours, and coffee mornings.

In 2022 The Center needed more space and so relocated to 238 Zhong Shan N. Rd. Section 6, Shilin District, Taipei.
